Warmth and Nourishment for All: A Reflection on my personal Mission and Recent COLD Dips

On those chilly Tassie evenings we’re now experiencing here in Tasmania, temps as low as -13 degrees in some parts, I have the privilege of keeping the wood up to my wood heater, providing beautiful warmth to our home. As I sit with my family and enjoy an array of wonderful Tassie food, the thought of going without or having to choose between staying warm or eating regularly crosses my mind. It’s a heartbreaking reality that many mums, dads, families, individuals, and children in our beautiful state have to face every day.

This is why, along with over 250 amazing supporters, I took a 3-minute icy dip to support Tasmanians doing it tough as part of a winter campaign for Devonport Chaplaincy, which includes our work as Loaves and Fishes Tasmania. In just a few minutes, our icy plunge was over, but for so many Tasmanians, the challenges last much longer. This short, sharp, cold dip for us is just a little reminder of the challenges some face during a cold winter. While those of us taking part could alleviate our slight discomfort with a hot shower and a meal, the pain is ongoing and acute for those experiencing food insecurity, the challenges of both mental and physical challenges. Their toughest winters and periods of doubt, often extend far beyond a single evening.

This isn’t about our organisation —it’s about the values I hold dear. Relationships are fundamental to everything; without them, nothing truly meaningful can happen. It’s not organisations or institutions that make a difference—it’s people helping people. Warmth, nourishment, community, and hope are the values that matter most to me, and they define my commitment to making a positive impact. So, here are some further reflections on our recent cold dips and the reasons behind them!

Warmth

Warmth is a fundamental human need that extends beyond the physical sensation of being warm. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe, valued, and supported. Warmth in our homes translates to warmth in our hearts and communities. It fosters a sense of belonging and security, ensuring that every individual feels part of a larger, caring community.

As an organisation dedicated to supporting Tasmanians, we strive to provide this warmth in various ways. Whether through the physical warmth of a meal, the emotional warmth of a supportive conversation, or the psychological warmth of knowing someone cares, our mission is to wrap those in need with a blanket of compassion and support. Warmth is not merely about survival; it’s about thriving in a community that cares for one another.

Nourishment

Nourishment goes beyond providing food. It encompasses the holistic well-being of individuals and communities. Nourishment means ensuring that people have access to nutritious food that sustains their bodies, but also that they have opportunities for growth, learning, and development.

We are committed to offering not just immediate food relief but also long-term solutions that promote self-sufficiency and empowerment. Through education, training, and job opportunities, we aim to nourish the minds and spirits of those we serve. By supporting local farmers and producers, we contribute to a sustainable food system that benefits everyone in Tasmania.

Community

Community is at the heart of everything we do. It’s about building connections and fostering relationships that uplift and empower. A strong community provides a network of support, ensuring that no one has to face their struggles alone.

Our recent cold dip event was a powerful demonstration of community in action. It showed that when we come together, we can make a significant impact. The sense of solidarity and shared purpose among the participants was a testament to the strength of our community.

Hope

Hope is the driving force behind our organisational mission. It’s the belief that we can create a better future for everyone, no matter their current circumstances. Hope motivates us to keep pushing forward, finding new ways to support and uplift those in need.

For me personally, my hope is deeply rooted in spiritual conviction and guides how I seek to lead our organisation. I believe in the transformative power of hope found in Jesus. This hope inspires us to serve with love, compassion, and dedication. It reminds us that no matter how dark the present may seem, there is always a brighter future ahead. As Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” The teachings of Jesus guide us in our mission to care for the hungry, the needy, and the marginalised, embodying the spirit of service and selflessness.

As Loaves and Fishes Tasmania, providing food for tonight and hope for tomorrow encapsulates our dual focus on immediate relief and long-term change. We are committed to not just addressing the symptoms of food insecurity but also tackling its root causes. By building a more equitable and sustainable food system, we aim to ensure that every Tasmanian has the opportunity to thrive.

Providing food for tonight is absolutely essential, but our mission extends beyond this immediate need. We are dedicated to offering nutritious food and fostering long-term hope. This involves not only ensuring immediate food security but also empowering individuals through education, training, and job opportunities.

By offering love and care during challenging times and equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, we create pathways to empowerment and a brighter, hope-filled future.

Conclusion

For me personally, I know that this is being the church, this is being a follower of Jesus and living by His principles—supporting the immediate and driving future change; providing food for tonight, hope for tomorrow. That is Devonport Chaplaincy and Loaves and Fishes Tasmania.

Any tax-deductible gift you give will make a significant difference. It will help us put food on the table for those who need it most, or ensure those going through a tough season have the necessary support they need.

As we look back on our recent efforts, we’re reminded of the importance of our mission. The warmth we seek to provide isn’t just the physical comfort of a hot meal or a heated home; it’s the emotional and psychological warmth that comes from knowing someone cares. It’s the nourishment of the soul that comes from being part of a community that looks out for each other.

Our recent cold dip event was a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by many in our community. But it was also a testament to the strength and compassion of our supporters. Together, we can continue to make a difference. Thank you for your continued support and for standing with us as we work towards a brighter, more hopeful future for every Tasmanian.
