At the heart of life and meaningful work lies the truth that relationship, community, and connection are foundational. It’s in the small, seemingly insignificant moments that the seeds of something extraordinary are sown. Taking time to honor these moments—listening to someone’s story, offering a helping hand, or simply being present—nurtures the kind of growth that leads to lasting impact. Without care for the small, the big things we chase will ultimately falter, for their foundations are weak.
The world often chases after “big and shiny”—achievements that appear grand but lack substance. But the Kingdom of God teaches us a different perspective: that out of little things, big things grow. And “big” here doesn’t mean large in size or outward success, but rather big in spirit, depth, and meaning.
As the Bible says in Luke 16:10:
“Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is dishonest in very little is also dishonest in much.”
God calls us to be stewards of the small. When we tend to the “insignificant” things with care, faith, and humility, He entrusts us with greater responsibilities. Like the mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, our small acts of kindness and faith can grow into something mighty, a blessing that provides shelter and nourishment to others (Matthew 13:31-32).
This truth challenges us to value what often goes unnoticed: a conversation, a shared meal, a moment of stillness with God. For it is in these small acts that we reflect the heart of Jesus, who said:
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40).
The beauty of God’s Kingdom is that it turns our human definitions of greatness upside down. Instead of chasing size, applause, or visibility, it calls us to chase love, faithfulness, and humility. From this posture, true greatness grows—great in spirit, rooted in care for others, and aligned with God’s purposes.
Let us expand our vision, seeing every moment and interaction as an opportunity to connect deeply and build community. For in God’s economy, nothing is insignificant. As the saying goes, “Out of little things, big things grow.” And with God, those big things are always good.
An example of this will be seen in the upcoming Here to Serve 2024 event hosted by Devonport Churches. This initiative is a beautiful demonstration of how small acts of service can foster connection and impact lives. However, let this not be confined to a single special event—this kind of care and faithfulness should become a normal part of everyday life. Learn more at Here to Serve 2024.
